2026 Training and Mentorship Program (January to December)
This program aims to foster a new generation of visual storytellers in Canada who are well-trained, unhindered by student loan debt, and focused on using their unique voices and perspectives to document and preserve our country’s history—influencing the ways in which Canadians see themselves for decades to come.

The Globe and Mail Foundation’s photojournalism training programs cover topics including historical and contemporary practice within documentary photography, sustainability and funding, professional networking and job opportunities, and more. The program is designed to fill the gap in the availability of training opportunities for photographers in Canada, benefit public understanding of and engagement with key issues and stories through high-quality training of visual storytellers, and by promoting excellence in the craft.
Designed by Chris Donovan, an experienced photojournalist and educator, this program will help develop a new generation of visual storytellers in Canada who are unhindered by student loan debt, and focused on using their craft to shape the ways in which Canadians see themselves for decades to come.
Program Format
Selection Jury
Through an open call for applications, The Globe and Mail Foundation Training and Mentorship Program invites photographers from across Canada to develop a long-form visual project, giving them the support and tools to make a viable career in visual storytelling and photojournalism. The program aims to build strong relationships within the cohort, and within the professional community at large, that will develop and sustain participants’ careers.
The program consists of the following components delivered through weekly online classes:
Online learning and peer mentorship: Classes on the history of documentary photography, ethics, and class presentations on their work with group feedback
Story Development: How to construct visual narratives through various media and approaches
Career Development: Guest speakers, grant writing workshops, career sustainability as a documentary photographer, and exposure to exhibition/publishing opportunities
Participation in The Globe Photojournalism Summit: An intensive educational weekend featuring top photojournalists, editors, and industry experts
