Mackenzie Pardy is a documentary photographer from Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia), who holds a Diploma in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the University of Gloucestershire (UK). A recipient of the Governor General of Canada’s Caring Canadian Award, her community-based practice focuses on long-form storytelling that challenges colonial narratives and explores how documentary photography can support Indigenous sovereignty, environmental justice, and cultural continuity. Mackenzie’s project will document the significance of kataq (American Eels) in Mi’kmaw culture, and explore the ecological and cultural implications of their decline.

As American Eel populations face critical threats from overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change, Najikate’kejik - They Are Going to Hunt For Eels documents the cultural, ecological and spiritual significance of kataq (eels) to the Mi’kmaw people, as well as the broader ecological and cultural implications of their decline.
