Donation Acceptance Policy
The Globe and Mail Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to protecting and promoting excellence in journalism. We raise money to provide training activities for emerging and established journalists, to increase the availability of paywall-free journalism on topics of critical and/or strategic importance, and to hold media literacy activities for the public. As such, we welcome donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations to help us achieve our mission.

- Donations via cash, cheque, electronic funds transfer, credit card payment
- Publicly traded securities. Transfer and recording the value of the asset shall be done in a consistent manner and in compliance with accounting standards. The Executive Director shall sell any stock given to the organization immediately upon receipt by the organization.
- Wills and bequests
- The Globe and Mail Foundation will accept, but cannot provide a charitable tax receipt, for the following donations:
- Donations under $25 (with the exception of donations made via the Canada Helps platform, which provides charitable tax receipts automatically.)
- In-kind donations such as made to the office space, or as part of an event sponsorship (examples may include donations of artwork, furnishings or equipment, auction items or experiences for future events)
- The Globe and Mail Foundation will not accept donations or enter into partnerships that it believes would compromise its integrity, autonomy and funding freedom.
- The Foundation reserves the right to accept or decline any gift. The final decision to decline a gift will rest with the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
- The Foundation encourages unrestricted gifts wherever possible. Where a donor states a preference for a donation to be directed to a specific project, we will use this gift for the purpose as provided.
- Unrestricted gifts will be used for the Foundation’s area of greatest need, with a significant portion always directed to program delivery and maximizing our impact in accordance with the Foundation’s mission.
- We discourage anonymity when making public donations, but may honour the request if a case is made by the donor to remain anonymous.
- Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors, sponsors, or their products or opinions.
- Accountability to donors will be of the highest calibre, through timely acknowledgement and reporting by Foundation staff.
- All donations will be recorded and receipted in accordance with CRA rules and regulations, with donation records and correspondence kept for a minimum of 7 years.

- No approvals shall be granted over editorial content nor shall the Board request to review content prior to publication.
