Simran Kaur
Simran is a photography student at Langara College in British Columbia and an emerging documentary photographer. Before studying photography, she trained as an engineer, but becoming a mother during the COVID-19 pandemic led her to pursue visual storytelling. As an immigrant, a woman, and a mother, Simran is interested in documenting everyday experiences that are often overlooked, with a focus on community, identity, and social issues. Through The Globe and Mail Foundation's mentorship program, she is developing Between Meals, a long-term documentary project exploring the resilience and lived experiences of single mothers navigating food insecurity and the rising cost of living.

1. Between Stillness and Motion
A slow shutter and panning technique isolate the cyclist against the blurred movement of the city at blue hour.
2. Red Against the Sunset
Using the setting sun as a secondary light and a flash to selectively illuminate the balloons, I wanted to play with silhouette, colour, and the contrast between natural and artificial light.
3. In the Green
Using low-key lighting and a muted green colour cast, I wanted to create a portrait that feels cinematic, quiet, and slightly unfamiliar.
