The Globe and Mail Foundation Scholarship for a Syrian Media Professional: Online Journalism Fellowship at the University of Toronto

The part-time program will run from September 8, 2026, to March 16, 2027. Fellows can join either online from anywhere in the world or in person. In-person attendance is not required. 

The Fellowship in Journalism and Health Impact teaches subject matter specialists from around the world how to cover their specialties as reporting beats for Canadian and other international media. Specialties are not limited to health. This is an opportunity for a Syrian media professional to receive support during Syria’s transition, so they can begin to work with global newsroom editors and an international audience.  The Fellow will be mentored directly by program faculty as they find, pitch and report their own stories and plan their careers. They will also receive specialized training in a portfolio of journalism skills, including AI for reporting, investigative journalism, and how to build and maintain a freelance practice. 

Fellows can attend the entire program online, which includes:

• A two-week “bootcamp” from Sept. 8 – 18, 2026 

• Weekly, full-cohort teaching and story meetings from Sept 22, 2026 to March 16, 2027 

• Skills classes on one Friday / Saturday pair every month, from October 2026 through March, 2027.

Applications are open to those who are proficient in English. Additional support and mentorship will be provided by The Globe and Mail Foundation according to the Fellow’s needs.
